If Left Untreated, Varicose Veins Can Pose Risks

Varicose veins are an unsightly nuissance for one in two people over 50 who enjoy wearing warm weather clothing during summer months. For many people, the aesthetic benefit of getting treatment to clear up these bulging, ropy, or bruised looking veins offers enough incentive. However, few people are aware of the health dangers that can arise if varicose veins are left untreated.

Clogged Artery Procedure

Native New Yorker, John Astorina and his wife Fran of 41 years, love exploring the “Big Apple” on foot, soaking up all of its cultural and architectural richness. But, a diabetic for 31 years, john recently began having problems with blood flow in his legs. “I would be required to stop after walking just a couple of city blocks because the pain in either my right leg or left leg became excruciating and I would have to stop until the blood flowed down again and permitted me to walk, so that is probably when the leg pain became very severe,” says John Astorina.

John was suffering from diabetic ulcers on his feet. His condition got progressively worse…he developed peripheral artery disease and faced the possibility of amputation. “I was frightened, my wife was very frightened, my children I had adult children were being very supportive but I know they were frightened as well, we are a close family, but, I was determined to do whatever medically was necessary to escape amputation,” says John.

Stent Danger

There’s new evidence the latest generation of coronary stents--those that are coated with drugs--may in fact be associated with an increased risk of blood clots in the heart arteries they’re designed to keep open.

Coronary stents have been an incredible advance in cardiology. The latest type, those that are coated with drugs, help keep the arteries clear by preventing scar tissue from developing.

But now comes new worries over a delayed side effect: a blockage of these stents by clot formation. It has doctors wondering how to best address the problem.
