Understanding the Keratoconus
What is Keratoconus?
 Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory condition of the cornea in which there is progressive central thinning of the cornea changing it from dome shape to cone shape. Keratoconus comes from the Greek word meaning conical cornea. The cornea is the clear windshield of the eye and is responsible for refracting most of the light coming into the eye. Therefore any abnormality of the cornea can greatly affect the way we see the world.
Symptoms:
 It is not a blinding disorder but it does result in increased near sightedness. That is, things far away are out of focus and irregular astigmatism, as in things looking tilted. And can significantly distort your vision. Sensativity to bright light can result as well as multiple imaging and irritation or itchiness.Mild to moderate Keratoconus is best corrected with a rigid, gas-permeable contact lens which provides a smooth surface in front of the cornea and making clear vision possible. This which smoothes out the irregularities of the cornea and makes clear vision possible again. The cornea can become deformed to such an extent that it is physically very difficult to get an adequate fit with a contact lens. Instead the cornea may need to be replaced surgically with a cornea of a more regular shape. The prognosis for corneal replacement is generally very good.
