Understanding Artherolsclerosis | Symptoms, Causes, Treatments
What is Arteriosclerosis?
Arteriosclerosis is the build-up of deposits called plaque in inner lying of an artery. Plaque is made of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin, which is a clotting material in the blood.
Why is Arteriosclerosis Dangerous?
The inner layer of the artery becomes thickened due to the buildup of the plaque. This reduces the amount of blood flow and oxygen supply to the surrounding muscle. If the oxygen supply to a portion of heart muscle is reduced or completely occluded, a heart attack can occur. If the oxygen supply to a portion of brain is cut off, a stroke can occur.
How Can Arteriosclerosis be Prevented?
Arteriosclerosis can be prevented by maintaining a healthy diet. By limiting your colesterol and your intake of saturated fats there is less cholesterol in the blood to get stuck within the artery wall. Active exercise habits help prevent Arteriosclerosis.
How is Anteriosclerosis Treated?
The use of anticoagulants (blood thinners) is perscribed to treat this condition. Thinned out blood has the ability to travel through narrower blocked up arteries. Coronary Angioplasti procedures are used to clean out built up cholesterol. This procedure requires the use of a catheter which is a tubed device passed through the veins.
