Vitamin D is clearly an important factor in terms of preserving bone health. We are learning that bone health is an important factor in terms of how cancers are managed, so we spend a lot of time in promoting bone health. Skeletal events, which include any surgery that is necessary or radiation that is necessary to help heal broken bones are an important cause of morbidity and death in patients with cancer. So, in that vein, reducing the risk of fractures is an important part of the management of people with cancer.
I believe that we have ignored the fact that healthy bone is paramount to maintain a patient’s health because when somebody falls sick it is not just the bones that are falling sick, it is not just the colon that is falling sick, the entire body is getting sick. Promoting health is an important part of preventing more problems.We have spent a lot of effort in treating maladies or diseases as they occur, but clearly maintaining a healthy body is of vital importance.
