Danielle Blanco designs costume jewelry for a living. But, it was just a few months ago when her body became her latest design project. Redesign rather, with Danielle deciding to opt for mesotherapy melt away unwanted fat.
“I had put on a lot of weight in a short period of time, I have a tendency to put the weight on in my stomach and in my arms,” says Danielle.

Struggling with her weight, Danielle was desperate to get a jump start. She decided to try mesotherapy. It’s the latest fat-melting technique used for weight loss, spot weight loss and cellulite reduction. It allowed Danielle to target her problem areas. “I lost almost 13 inches,” says Danielle.
Imported from France, mesotherapy is gaining momentum in the U.S. The technique, which is not FDA-approved, involves undergoing hundreds of injections, once a week for several weeks. A cocktail of drugs and supplements are injected into the mesodermal or middle layer of the skin.
“That’s the layer that has fat and connective tissue banding that can cause cellulite,” says Dr. Marion Shapiro.
Dr. Shapiro trained in France to become a licensed mesotherapist.
“We basically make a formula based on factors such as how much fat a patient has, how thick their fat is or how firm it is, how thin the skin is or how thick. In addition we look at how much loose skin and how much cellulite they have.”
The formula is a mixture of drugs usually including aminophylline, an asthma medication and isoproterenol, a cardiac medicine. Both are FDA-approved, but not for cosmetic use. The concoction which also contains different vitamins and supplements is supposed to block the body’s ability to store fat and stimulate the ability to burn it up.
Jennifer Polack is a fitness fanatic, but she just couldn’t trim down.
“I was worried about places like my inner thigh and outer thigh. More than the weight, I was worried about how it looked. I wanted it thinner.”
Within 4 weeks of treatment Jennifer saw a significant difference.
“It made me want to have more mesotherapy, and keep coming back.”
But some medical experts are putting up the red flag saying that because the mesotherapy formula is not a standardized mixture and can vary depending on the doctor’s cocktail choices, patients don’t really know what they’re getting. And Dr. Shapiro would not tell us all the ingredients.
There are still lots of unanswered questions of mesotherapy, before it can be fully accepted as a medical field.
Dr. James Spencer is the Director of Dermatologic Surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “If the fat is breaking down in your tummy and you’ve got all the fat molecules, where does it go? Does it get metabolized? Does it go somewhere else? This hasn’t been studied, nobody knows,” says Dr. Spencer.
Happy with her mesotherapy results, Danielle is now making every effort to maintain her new figure. “I walk, I do yoga three times a week and I watch what I eat.”
Mesotherapy sessions can cost several hundred dollars and the shots may cause some temporary bruising. Because mesotherapy is new on the weight loss scene, you must be extremely careful to determine if a mesotherapist in your area is licensed and qualified, and talk to your regular physician first.
