Stomach Fat Bad for Bones

Do you carry a little extra in the middle? It may be time to hit the gym. It's been known for a while that having a waist to hip ratio of larger than .80 can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke diabetes, hypertension and a host of other disease. Recently however, researchers at Harvard Medical School have discovered that excessive abdominal fat can be bad for bone health, which contradicts the commonly held belief that obese women are less likely to develop osteoporosis.


These findings were presented by researchers at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago. The lead author of the study, Miriam A Brendal, MD said that, "We know that obesity is a major public health problem. Now we know that abdominal obesity needs to be included as a risk factor for osteoporosis and bone loss." The study was done with 50 obese, pre-menopausal women, and the researchers observed the fat levels and mineral densities of these women. They specifically found that, “Our results showed that having a lot of belly fat is more detrimental to bone health than having more superficial fat or fat around the hips."


According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, around 72 million US adults are obese. If your one of the many Americans, who is overweight, don’t wait, but do something about it. Taking care of your health is important. If you are overweight, especially if you tend to get a roll around the middle, get moving. Having an active lifestyle and making smart food choices can have a major impact on your overall health.
