Steven Park, M.D. on the Challenges Faced by Children with Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea in children doesn't really get that much attention, especially with all the other health related stories that talk about children - particularly ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and other behavioral issues. But one interesting note is that there a lots of studies can cause and aggravate ADHD. One study speculates that up to one half of all children with ADHD may have a treatable sleeping breathing problem.
On a clinical basis I see it happening all the time - children with these huge tonsils who come to see me for recurring infections or snoring. After the tonsils are taken out the children’s behavior improves dramatically. They do much better in school, they can focus better. They don’t wet their beds any more. A lot of things can improve just by being able to sleep better.
