Treadmill Exercise Helps Patients With Leg-Artery Disease
Patients with leg arteries partly or fully blocked by plaque, a condition that hinders walking and often produces debilitating leg pain, had their walking endurance and quality of life boosted by treadmill exercise, according to a recent study.
The condition, known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), afflicts approximately one in 16 American adults 40 years of age and older. The disorder leads to a gradual deterioration in leg function. There had never before been a study done on the influence of exercise on PAD sufferers. ( Read more about Treadmill Exercise Helps Patients With Leg-Artery Disease)

Compound in Indian Curry Attenuates Strokes
Curry may also be a pharmaceutical. Research that's being conducted at the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine is showing that curcumin, the biologically active compound in curry's main spice, turmeric, can diminish the size of blood clots in the brain. These clots form when a blood vessel bursts in the brain, causing a hemorrhagic stroke. These comprise 17 percent of strokes, according to the American Stroke Association. As a bonus, curcumin reduces one's chances of coming down with cancer and Alzheimer's disease. ( Read more about Compound in Indian Curry Attenuates Strokes)

What is the Polypill?
Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the Polypill. The Polypill is being developed in response to an important reality surrounding cardiovascular disease. There are three important drugs that can help prevent heart disease (statins, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin). These drugs are not taken for two major reasons. First, the drugs are simply too expensive for much of the world, including countries as developed as Russia. And secondly, in developed nations where the drugs are affordable patients too often fail to comply - after three years 70% of patients do not take the medications as prescribed. What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?
Dr. Sattesh Babu of Vascular Associates of Westchester discusses Peripheral Arterial Disease, who is at risk, why it is important to be screened and current treatments. Pad is essentially a blockage of the arteries in the lower extremities. That is what we mean by peripheral arteries -- leg arteries blocked by hardening of the arteries, buildup of cholesterol, plaque and calcium. This in part is a process of aging, but certainly also brought on by smoking. Diabetes is another risk factor, as is hypertension. ( Read more about What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?)

Women, Obesity Rates, and the Fountain of Youth
The fattening of America is so out there, so obvious, the question has become how do we get the message that we need to reverse the trend? Perhaps, the message is sinking in, at least among women. New research released by the CDC shows, among women, no significant increase in obesity was observed between 1999 and 2004…roughly a third of females remain obese ( Read more about Women, Obesity Rates, and the Fountain of Youth)

Sudden Death Predictor
Sudden cardiac death is one of the leading causes of mortality in America. Now, new research points to a way to identify those most at risk--and it involves a simple exercise test. The frustration lies in the name of the problem. Sudden cardiac death is sudden because it's typically the first sign or symptom that an individual has a heart problem. And, often, sadly, it's the last. ( Read more about Sudden Death Predictor)
