More Cardiac Death in Women Using Antidepressants

[Edit]

Antidepressant use among women is associated with greater risk for sudden cardiac death, a recent study revealed.     But the reason for the link is unclear, and the fact doesn’t suggest that antidepressants should be avoided, the scientists said. In fact, it may be that antidepressant use is just a sign of depression, and the real causal link is between depression and heart problems. The report said women with clinical depression had more than twice the risk of experiencing sudden cardiac death.

The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, was led by William Whang, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City..

“We suspect that [antidepressant] use is a marker for people with worse depression,” said Whang. “The elevated risk seems more specific for antidepressant use, but that use may well be a marker of more severe symptoms.”

It’s more than likely that the association of depression with heart problems has a physical basis than a psychological one, Whang stated. “We found that women who had worse depressive symptoms had higher rates of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and smoking,” he said.

In the study, the scientists used data on more than 63,000 American women who participated in the Nurses Health Study. The research team found that the use of antidepressants was linked with sudden cardiac death but not with greater risk of heart attacks or fatal heart disease in general.

The study showed a connection between depression and sudden cardiac death in women without heart disease – and this makes it different, Whang noted, from other studies that showed such a link in people who already had heart disease.

The researcher saw a clear message for physicians who treat women with depression. “The biggest clinical implication is that management of coronary heart disease risk factors may be especially important for those with depressive symptoms,” he said. “Taking care of those risk factors can modify the risk for coronary disease.”
