Cholesterol Treatment Revelation

If you are on a cholesterol lowering medicine, there is important new information just released. New research shows that along with checking your cholesterol levels, you should be following a blood test detecting inflammation in your body. Statins, the cholesterol lowering medicines, have been shown to decrease the formation of fatty cholesterol plaque that clogs heart arteries, and all the other arteries in the body for that matter. No question, this lowers the risk of heart attack and death.

New research shows that cholesterol lowering drugs not only reduce the fatty plaque in the arteries but also decrease inflammation in the body, and in the blood vessels. This inflammation, left unchecked, works with cholesterol to create heart disease and heart attacks. So, while you check for high cholesterol you should also take a blood test to detect inflammation. These cholesterol lowering drugs Statins, have been shown to lower the risk of heart attack and death by decrease the formation of fatty cholesterol plaque that clogs heart arteries, and all the other arteries in the body for that matter.

But there is a significant bonus one gets when one takes one of these cholesterol lowering medicines. Two new studies in the New England Journal of Medicine show the statins also decrease inflammation in the body, and in the blood vessels. This inflammation, left unchecked, works with cholesterol to create heart disease and heart attacks. But if the blood marker for inflammation, called C-reactive protein, is lowered, which has been shown to be the case with statins, heart attack risk and death risk is reduced, particularly among those who already have had heart attacks.

Dr. Nate Lebowitz, a cardiologist at Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, says, "The C-reactive protein clearly illustrates what we've had an inclination of for some time, that coronary artery disease is an inflammatory disease and possibly an autoimmune disease." Edward Riley had two blocked arteries that were reopened with stents, a high risk patient for heart attack. He's on a statin to reduce his cholesterol, and is getting the anti-inflammatory benefits. "I'm taking lipitor and neospan. All my levels are really down." says Edward.

For Edward, the benefit of reducing inflammation on heart attack and death risk is independent of cholesterol levels, meaning, even if only the inflammation were lowered, and not the cholesterol, his risk would be reduced. But, the studies show if one lowers the LDL, or bad cholesterol to below 70, and if the C - reactive protein is lowered to below 2, one gets the maximum benefit. "Now we know we can take the two pieces of information -the C-reactive protein level and the LDL level- and have far better predictive power of someone's risk level in the next year or two compared to just knowing the LDL level alone." says Dr. Lebowitz.

The authors say it doesn't matter which type of statin medicine or which dose one takes. As long as the patient, in New York and other cities, gets to the goals identified, which are LDL cholesterol below 70 and a C-reactive protein level of below 2. The anti-inflammatory benefits are so significant, these cholesterol lowering medicines are being identified as potential treatments for arthritis, lupus, even multiple sclerosis. So at a time when vioxx and celebrex, traditional anti-inflammatory drugs, are falling out of favor, the anti-inflammatory anti-cholesterol statin medicines are being hailed as having terrific potential, their benefit already proven in cardiovascular disease.
