Humanistic Cancer Care

A focus on emotional health and overall well being is changing how cancer is treated.

For many who are diagnosed with Cancer, the initial reaction is shock mixed with fear. While coping with the news, having support during a time of uncertainty and stress makes a world of difference. Several cancer treatment centers, such as the Eastchester Center for Cancer Care, are acknowledging the importance of going beyond treating the physical challenge of cancer. Cancer centers now focus on providing emotional support through both a warm environment and a compassionate staff.

"One of the things we thought of is, 'Well, let's try to make the downstairs, the reception area, look very much like a house.' As much as is possible in a public place".

To supplement oncological treatment, many cancer care groups offer additional therapies to give patients a balanced array of support. Many of these humanistic treatments help patients to cope with the challenges that coincide with battling cancer.

"We also have a yoga therapists that comes and she does seated yoga with the patients who are getting chemotherapy. And people love her, they love to do the yoga. And apparently she was able to decrease someone's blood pressure by doing yoga therapy."

Patients who have survived the fight with cancer, often look back on their time of need with mixed emotions. Many have had their lives changed by the personal impact a humanistic cancer center has had on their lives.

"I feel like I was getting a gift by getting cancer because I never would have met all these people. These beautiful people that I met here."

While the battle with cancer is ongoing, many take solace in knowing that they are not alone in their struggle.
