E.Coli infection has been associated with an increased risk of developing hypertension, heart disease and kidney problems

These findings were presented in the British Medical Journal by Canadian researchers. The researchers were interested in discovering the long term effects of E.coli infection, which previously has not been heavily researched. This team was headed by William F. Clark, a Professor of Nephrology at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario. They assessed the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney problems and hypertension.

According to their findings, those who developed gastroenteritis symptoms had a 1.3 times higher risk of developing hypertension (high blood pressure) compared to those who had not been infected. The risk of kidney problems was 3.4 times higher, and the risk of having a cardiovascular even such as stroke or heart attack was 2.1 times higher.

The researchers gathered data from the Walkerton Health Study evaluated the long term health of 1,977 individuals who had developed gastroenteritis from a tainted municipal water system in May 2000. The water was infected with Campylobacter and E. Coli 0157:H7 bacteria, causing 1,067 of people to become ill with acute gastroenteritis, and 378 people to seek medical care.

It is reported than in America approximately 120,000 people each year develop gastro-enteric illness from E. coli 0157:H7 infections. About 2,000 are admitted to hospital.

The authors of this study stressed the importance of ensuring safe and uncontaminated food and water supplies for public health. They also noted that, “Our findings underline the need for following up individual cases of food or water poisoning by E coli O157:H7 to prevent or reduce silent progressive vascular injury.” If you have been infected with E. Coli, it’s important to follow up with a physician regularly.
