Ginseng Combination Helps Bowel Movements
Ginseng, with two other ingredients that together form a traditional Japanese herbal medicine, promotes gastrointestinal health and regular bowel movements, a recent study showed. The findings, published in the journal Neurogastroenterology and Motility, revealed that Dai-Kenchu-to, a mixture of ginseng, ginger and zanthoxylum fruit, helped relieve constipation in children and in patients with post-operative ileus. The latter is a disruption of normal bowel movements after an operation. ( Read more about Ginseng Combination Helps Bowel Movements)

What is Gastroenterology?
Video: Dr. Jonathan Cohen of the Concorde Medical Group discusses Gastroenterology. Gastroenterology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on the digestive tract - from the mouth to the anus. Gastroenterolgy studies the functioning and disorders of the esophagus, stomach and intestines, as well as its associated organs such as the liver, pancreas and gall bladder. There is documented evidence that some forms of Gastroenterolgy were practiced in ancient Egypt. Greek, Roman and Arab practitioners studied the digestive tracts of the human body with specially designed spatula and mirrors illuminated by candles or oil lamps. More complex tools for examining the rectum with dilating specula were found in the ruins of Pompeii. ( Read more about What is Gastroenterology?)

Update on New IBS Treatment
There may be a new answer for a very common gastrointestinal disorder called irritable bowel syndrome. The answer: an antibiotic. A new study just released shows perhaps treating bacterial overgrowth of the intestines with an antibiotic might help. Kim Williams has suffered tremendously from irritable bowel syndrome--a disease that doesn’t kill, it doesn’t cause life-changing disability--except for making one a slave to his or her bathroom. “I’ve had days while having I.B.S. that I couldn’t go to work or I couldn’t go to school because i didn’t know if I could make it to my destination because I didn’t know if I could find a bathroom,” says Kim. Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by abdominal pain and bloating associated with diarrhea, constipation, or these two alternating. ( Read more about Update on New IBS Treatment)

New IBS Treatment

Doris Brundza says that battling irritable bowel syndrome for over two decades completely zapped away her energy. “It impacted my energy level because with irritable bowel sometimes you feel like your bowels are inflamed and when you have diarrhea that is exhausting,” says Doris. Severe abdominal pain, bloating and altered bowel habits are all a part of living with irritable bowel syndrome. There is no known cure for it, however, promising new research may have just unlocked some of the mystery of this disease. The missing link…a bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. “In irritable bowel syndrome there is an altered motility that can lead to certain parts of the intestine getting sluggish, and the bacteria that are normally present in our intestine can overgrow and that is called bacterial overgrowth and the symptoms of bacteria overgrowth in the intestine are very similar to I.B.S., bloating, gas pains, cramping, so the idea was can we give an antibiotic to get rid of some of these symptoms in I.B.S. patients,” says Dr. Christine Frissora of New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease can make life miserable for people who suffer from it. It is inconvenient to the point of adversely affecting the quality of life. “Because of inflammatory bowel syndrome, for my entire life, wherever I went I had to know where the nearest bathroom was, and make sure I didn’t stray too far from it,” says 16 year old Melissa Feinberg.
