Nystagmus - rhythmic wobbling of the eyes
What is Nystagmus?
Nystagmus is the medical term for the rhythmic wobbling of the eyes. You can see a type of nystagmus by watching the eyes of a passenger who looks outside the window of a moving car or train.
Possible Causes:
 The eyes oscillate back and forth. This is quite normal. However, when nystagmus occurs spontaneously when the person is looking at a stationary object, it is abnormal and may indicate there is something wrong with the eyes or the brain. The eye is controlled by several muscles that move the eye in different directions. However, these muscles can become stimulated and move the eye rapidly back and forth. The cause of nystagmus is unknown. Most individuals with nystagmus perceive objects as stationary. It is believed that the brain is responsible for the perception adjustment.
Treatments:
Educationally, children with nystagmus may tend to lose their place in reading instructions may be helped with the use of a typo scope which is a card with a rectangular hole to view one word or line at a time, or an under-liner. As children with nystagmus mature, they seem to need these support devices less often.
