Get Your Beauty Sleep
When your mother told you to be sure and get your beauty sleep, she knew what she was talking about. It turns out that the key to looking young, healthy, and vital can be as simple as getting a good night's rest. A recent study published in the British Medical Journal confirmed what many of us intuitively knew; getting a healthy amount of sleep each night makes you look more attractive.
The research was done with a group of 23 adult non smokers aged 18 to 31. They were first photographed between 2pm and 3 pm after they had gotten a full night’s sleep, the second after they had undergone sleep deprivation. All the pictures were taken in a well lit room and none of the subjects were wearing makeup, all had their hair combed back.
For the second half, 65 people were shown the photos and asked to rate the attractiveness, health, and vigor of the people in the photos. In the vast majority of cases, the photos of those who had had a good night’s sleep were viewed as more attractive, healthier, and more awake. According to the researchers, "This suggests that humans are sensitive to sleep related facial cues, with potential implications for social and clinical judgments and behaviour.”
So take your mother’s advice. If you have a big interview or date, or are just getting ready for an event where you need to look your best, be sure to get a good night’s sleep first.
