Eric Donnenfeld M.D., F.A.C.S. on the Benefits of Wavefront Guided Ablations
The eye is analyzed for individual shape, irregularities and micro-irregularities. These wavefront guided ablations produce better than 20/20 visions (without glasses on) for the majority of patients. Patients get better night vision and better visual acuity. NASA approved customized wavefront treatments, using the interlace to make the flap, for its astronauts, in 2007. This same technique is the one used at TLC Laser Eye Center.
This laser was originally used by IBM to etch microchips. Dr. Donnenfeld was involved in the trials, using such a laser on the eyes, at Manhattan Eye and Ear in late 1980s and early 1990s. It was formally approved by the FDA in 1995. At that point, any opthamologist can conduct the surgery. Since then, the procedure has advanced, producing even better visual acuity than the quality of the procedure which was originally approved.
