LASIK Surgery Can Cause Dry Eye Syndrome
While LASIK eye surgery in most cases results in vision improvement to 20/20 or better, an occasional subject becomes affected by a chronic condition in which the eye has a problem with lack of lubrication. This condition is known as dry-eye syndrome. It can affect those who have not undergone LASIK surgery, a procedure that is not recommended for such people. Screening by eye surgeons is supposed to exclude all dry-eye sufferers from LASIK, but some get through and often experience a worsened condition after surgery. Good Pupil Diameter Key for Successful LASIK Surgery
Laser eye surgery, hugely successful for the great majority of patients, can fail if a subject’s pupils are too large. Thus, a good eye doctor who wants to provide patients with LASIK surgery (short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) to correct faulty vision – including nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism – will carefully screen applicants for the procedure. LASIK's Reality: Impermanent for Many
LASIK eye surgery effectively and safely corrects severe nearsightedness, the results lasting for at least 10 years – but a significant proportion of the procedures need to be redone during that time, a recent study revealed.
Moreover, only 40 percent of LASIK patients avoid the use of glasses altogether after surgery, and for a great many, there is some vision deterioration over the 10-year period, the researchers wrote in the American Journal of Ophthalmology. ( Read more about LASIK's Reality: Impermanent for Many)

Help for Those Beyond LASIK's Help
Although LASIK eye surgery gives the gift of restored vision to hundreds of thousands of Americans each year, there are some people who are so nearsighted - near or past being legally blind - that the laser surgery simply can't help them.
For those people, implantable contact lenses may be the answer. These lenses are permanently inserted beneath the surface of the eyeball. ( Read more about Help for Those Beyond LASIK's Help)

Epi-LASIK Surgery Better in Two Ways
A relatively new eye surgery technique improves patients' recovery times and reduces the postoperative pain they experience. The Epi-LASIK procedure was developed to avoid some of the potential problems with the LASIK and LASEK eye-surgery techniques. Procedurally speaking, Epi-LASIK falls in between the latter two, although all three involve cutting a flap in the surface tissue of the eye that can be folded back to allow for the laser sculpting of the cornea beneath. Lasik Innovation Produces Improved Results
In a recent study, a procedure called wavefront-guided Lasik surgery has produced better results in the area of night vision than conventional Lasik surgery. "Average night-driving performance was reduced after conventional Lasik and improved after wavefront-guided," said Steven C. Schallhorn, at a Berlin meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. "There was a significant loss in a fair number of eyes with conventional and a low percentage with wavefront-guided." ( Read more about Lasik Innovation Produces Improved Results)

Congenital Glaucoma
Congenital glaucoma is an eye disease where the normal eye pressure is affected by the buildup of fluid in the eye. You might say that 3 year old Juan Navarro is a little ham. Smiling and posing for the camera, he looks like your typical playful toddler. But when he was just an infant his mother Carmen noticed that his eyes did not look right. "There was a lot of white in his eyes." recalls Carmen. Doctors discovered that Juan was born with congenital glaucoma. It occurs in about 1 in every 10,000 births. The key to treating congenital glaucoma is early diagnosis. ( Read more about Congenital Glaucoma)
