Edward Rubin, M.D. on the Effects of Cortisone Injections
Cortisone is a very effective anti-inflammatory agent. There are different types of cortisone. Typically, the cortisone that is used for patients receiving injections -- it is usually either Kenalog [a triamcinolone] or Depo Medrol [a methylprednisolone]. And the reason they are used is because they are long-acting So the idea is: If I am going to put an anti-inflammatory medication near an irritated nerve, I am going to pick a drug that is going to last for many weeks and months.
The cortisone-type drugs are effective in reducing inflammation, but patients need to know that if they have underlying structural problems, such as badly herniated discs or fractures in their spine, or spinal stenosis -- which is a narrowing of the spinal canal -- they need to know that the effects of these drugs are limited by the duration of action that they last for.
So, patients having cortisone injections have to know that they are effective, but there is a time limit to how long they will last for. I typically tell patients to expect three to six months of improvement with their pain.
