It may be necessary to have additional tests done after treatment to check for cancer recurrence or spread (metastasis) as well as manage side effects. While undergoing treatment for cancer it is common to worry about whether or not the cancer has grown or spread. After treatment it is just as common to have fears of cancer recurrence.

The exact cause of colon and rectal cancers is not known. To date, the best preventative measure is regular screening. For those with no personal or family history of colon cancer, screening should begin at age 50. Those with higher risk of developing the cancers should begin screening sooner. Regular screening can find polyps before they become cancerous. Polyps can then be removed and colon and rectal cancers avoided completely.
