While a single cause of colon and rectal cancer has not been identified, many factors that increase the risk of getting the cancer are known. Factors that increase the risk of developing a certain illness are called risk factors. It is important to understand that risk factors simply identify those substances or behaviors that increase the risk of developing an illness. In the early stages esophageal cancer may go unnoticed. Usually, the disease is diagnosed when the cancer has spread (metastasized) to surrounding tissues and distant body sites. The first symptom usually experienced is difficulty swallowing. At first, the difficulty swallowing is only noticed with solid foods. Difficulty swallowing results from the narrowing of the esophagus due to the presence of the tumor. Usually after a period of weeks problems develop with the swallowing of soft foods as well as liquids due to growth of the tumor.

Endometrial cancer, commonly called uterine cancer, is the most common female reproductive tract adenocarcinoma. Incidence rate for the cancer is estimated at 188,000 women globally. Women in developed countries are at greater risk of developing the disease than those in underdeveloped nations. In 2009, uterine cancer accounted for more than 35,000 new cases and greater than 7,000 deaths in the United States. While women older than 50 are more susceptible to uterine cancer, incidence rate in younger women has been steadily increasing in the recent few years.

Ethnic traits, behaviors or environmental agents that increase the risk of developing a disease are called risk factors. As with all cancer, research on esophageal cancer continues. Genetic research is working to identify the exact cellular changes occurring within the esophagus cause the cancer. Once identified, the goal of the research is to develop targeted therapies to be used in treatment. Targeted therapies are those chemotherapeutic drugs that decrease the blood flow to the tumor or interrupt the cell processes to control growth and metastasis (spread).
