Cancers progress through different stages, each stage being more complex than the one previous. Cervical cancer staging describes the extent of the cancer, the size of the tumor, its depth and whether it is localized (within the cervix) or has spread to surrounding areas. Cervical cancer staging can be determined by the results of a biopsy, pathology report, cystoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, CT (computed tomography) scan and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix--part of the female reproductive system. According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, approximately 12,200 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed in the year 2009, leading to more than 4,200 deaths. The cancer is slow-growing with no or minor symptoms. Regular Pap tests can effectively pinpoint abnormal cervical areas/cells, which are then further examined by other diagnostic tests. The most common cervical cancer tests include the Pap Test, Coloscopy and Cone Biopsy.

Genetic research related to colon and rectal cancer is focused on learning more about the inherited genes that increase risk of developing colon and rectal cancers. Genetic testing is now being done to notify those who have the inherited genes of the increased risk of the cancers.
