David T.W. Chiu, M.D., F.A.C.S., received his surgical training at Barnes Hospital, Washington University Medical Center and completed his plastic surgery residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.  After a fellowship in hand surgery at New York University Medical Center, he remained on the faculty for a decade at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.  He returned to Columbia-Presbyterian medical Center in 1989 to serve as the Associated Director of Plastic Surgery and in 1994 as the Director of the Plastic Surgery Service, a position he held until 1997.
 
Dr. Chiu has established an international reputation as an innovator in plastic surgery, and expert in microsurgery, and an outstanding teacher.  He invented the autogenous venous nerve conduit technique, a fact that has propelled him into a position of international expertise and given so many the use of their hands back.  In addition, he has served as president of the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand and the New York Regional Society of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery.  More than a dozen awards from medical, scholarly and public institutions have marked his career as he continues to push the boundaries of medical knowledge.
