About Empire Physical Medicine & Pain Management
Steven S. Moalemi, M.D., F.A.A.P.M.R, P.C.
Steven Moalemi is well known to Manhattan professionals and patients alike, not only for his distinguished career using state-of-the-art approaches to pain management, but also as a consultant to other physicians.
As Medical Director of Empire Physical Medicine and Pain Management, the complex is noted for its emphasis of multispecialty diagnostic and treatment technologies that are among the most advanced in Manhattan. Despite the scope and sophistication of the instrumentation employed, the center’s approach assures a warm and personalized atmosphere for patients who are often in need of special considerations due to their conditions. The emphasis is always upon treating the person as well as the patient.
Dr. Moalemi has had extensive experience with different patient types and rehabilitation challenges within his areas of expertise. These include sub-specialization in pain management, sports medicine, electrodiagnostic testing and neuromuscular re-education. He has been a much sought after physician for his working knowledge of advanced pain management systems, and he is one of a handful of American physicians holding dual state certifications in Acupuncture. The incorporation of Acupuncture science in medical practices today represents a cutting-edge approach to combining the latest in both traditional medicine and complementary medicine. As such, he has been granted privilege at some of New York’s most prestigious teaching hospitals and centers of research.
Dr. Moalemi undertook his residency specialty training at several of the U.S.’s most renowned teaching facilities. His Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation studies were taken at the famous Mount Sinai Medical Center and School of Medicine in New York City, and in Philadelphia at the noted Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. A graduate of the State University of New York’s Brooklyn Health Science Center, Dr. Moalemi received the M.D. degree in 1993. In addition, he holds licenses to practice medicine in both New York and New Jersey. Following his advanced training, he completed all requirements needed for Board Certification in 1999, which is regarded as the highest attainable credential in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Following post-graduate training, Dr. Moalemi studied at the ACLA School Continuing Medical Education, completing specialized coursework and clinical practice in Acupuncture as an adjunct to his practice. In addition to traditional pain management approaches that may include physical therapy, medication controls, manipulation, pain blocks or injections, and other traditional approaches, his acupuncture skills place him at the forefront of practicing physicians in the area. The patient benefits most by his availability to a broad multi-modality approach to pain control.
Dr. Moalemi’s other areas of special concentration not often found in the average physical medicine practice is the non-surgical treatment of orthopedic and sports injuries, manual medicine, biomechanics and electromyography.
In addition, he is dedicated to keeping abreast of the latest developments in rehabilitative medicine and neurology through his membership in numerous professional societies including the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports, and Occupational Rehabilitation and the American Academy of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He also maintains his research updates in spinal pain through membership to the International Spinal Injection Society and various Acupuncture research publications. He has worked as a physician in the New York City marathon. He has also presented to other hospital physicians on the Epidural Steroid Injections in special pain cases.
In addition to clinical presentations, Dr. Moalemi has also been an invited guest lecturer to the Social Security Administration, corporations and banking institutions interested in reducing injury and absenteeism, and increasing productivity. The goal is always to eliminate pain and return the individual to their normal work and social activities.
Most importantly, however, Dr. Moalemi has become best known not only for his preeminent clinical expertise with the difficult or compromised rehabilitation cases, but especially for his warm personable approach to patient care. One easily forgets they are being treated by a clinician of such distinguished accomplishment, and his down-to-earth manner and sense of humor sets his patients quickly at ease.
In free time from his demanding schedule, Dr. Moalemi enjoys sports, including basketball and football. As President of his high school chess team, he is still a formidable opponent there as well. He also enjoys the culture and entertainment that living in New York City offers.
Dr. Moalemi’s plans for the future include further development of the Empire Physical Medicine and Pain Management complex as one of New York’s leading innovators in the fields of pain management and advanced rehabilitative services. The facility is also committed to providing various non-profit community education services through events held at a variety of Manhattan community service groups, institutions and corporations. Topics range from recovering from accidents and falls, to back injuries and a broad range of pain management issues and prevention of injury.
Empire Physical Medicine and Pain Management always entertains guest speaking engagement requests from hospitals and institutions based on the doctor’s availability an schedule. A schedule of future speaking events is available on request.
