The First Hospital in NY State with a "1A" Designation NewYork-Presbyterian Receives Highest Accreditation for Bariatric Surgery

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has been accredited as a Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) hospital with the highest possible designation (1A), by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The top-level designation is a first for New York State and one of only seven nationwide.

The ACS created the accreditation process for Bariatric Surgery Centers to ensure that patients were receiving the highest level care, at care facilities that according to their website had, "commitment, organization, leadership, human resources, and physical resources to provide optimal care," and that the staff must have, "the necessary training, skills, and experience demonstrable." The Obesity Surgery Center at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital was compared to this high standard, and received the highest possible designation.

Level 1A Bariatric Surgery Centers, as defined by the ACS, provide complete specialized care for all patients, including those with challenging or complex conditions. Also, the centers' highly credentialed bariatric surgeons are expected to handle a high volume of cases.

The bariatric surgery program at NewYork-Presbyterian is multidisciplinary in approach, bringing together specialists in nutrition, cardiology, gastroenterology, behavioral therapy, and endocrinology. When necessary, the full resources of the Hospital are available to patients. All patients are fully briefed on their condition and treatment plan, including surgical options. Patients are offered a support group led by a registered dietician and clinical psychologist.

Bariatric surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia is led by Dr. Marc Bessler, director of the Center for Obesity Surgery and director of laparoscopic surgery and assistant professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Bessler is the inventor of several surgical devices and procedures, including the gastrointestinal staplescope; a gastrointestinal tissue approximating and attaching device; and a device and method for performing laparoscopic vertical-banded gastroplasty.
