One type of vein removal treatment is the Endovenous Laser treatment method which is a minimally invasive, in-office treatment that serves as an alternative to surgical stripping of varicose veins in the leg. Instead of removing the saphenous vein, it is sealed closed using pulses of light energy. A local anesthetic is used to numb the leg area where the vein will be treated. A strand of laser fiber is inserted through a needle stick into the damaged vein. When the light energy is pulsed through the fiber it causes the vein walls to collapse and seal as the fiber is removed from the leg. The collapsed vein is then reabsorbed into the leg. 


Another option is sclerotherapy. This method employs a sclerosant which is a foam or a liquid substance which irritates the vein walls to collapse and be reabsorbed into the leg. An ultrasound is used to guide a needle to reach the abnormal veins and the sclerosant is injected and the vein is sealed.
