The operation is done by wrapping the "fundus" (the top part of the stomach) around the back of the oesophagus until it is once again in front. This has the outcome of generating a one-way valve in the oesophagus, allowing food to pass into the stomach, and at the same time, strengthens the valve between the oesophagus and stomach in an effort to prevent stomach acid from flowing into the oesophagus causing damage and pain from chronic reflux.
