If you are suffering from pain, numbness and weakness due to a herniated disc, you need to call Dr. Jon Grenillo, DC in Plymouth, Michigan.
A herniated disc occurs when the disc in your spine becomes damaged, and they begin to bulge or tear open. Herniated discs are also referred to as a slipped or ruptured disc. There is no limitation within the spinal column to where you may have a herniated disc. The most common place that is affected from a herniated disc is in the lower back. Sometimes you may have a herniated disc in the neck, and maybe even in the upper back. A herniated disc in the upper back is the least common type of herniated disc seen.
There are two main causes of a herniated disc:
- Wear and tear. As you age, the discs in your back dry out and they lose their flexibility.
- Spinal injuries. Spinal injuries may cause tears or cracks in the solid external layer of the disc. When this occurs, the disc may start bulging, breaking open or breaking into pieces.
When the herniated disc begins to press on the nerves, you will begin to hurt, have a lack of sensation, and feel weakness. The amount of weakness will depend on what part of the body the nerve that is being pinched is associated with. For example, if your herniated disc is in your back then you will feel pain and have a lack of sensation going down your leg.
There are a couple of different treatments that one can undergo:
- Bed rest, if the pain is intolerable or if the pain is not intolerable, then it is very important that you remain immobile.
- Place an ice pack on the painful spot between 10 and 15 minutes for at least 3 times a day. Make sure to place something between your skin and the ice pack.
- Medication that your doctor may prescribe. Medication will not heal the herniated disc, but it will assist with the discomfort.
