Bone Density Testing at Lawrence Hospital in Westchester, New York

Do you have osteoporosis? The Women’s Imaging Center at Lawrence Hospital Center in Westchester, New York offers bone density testing to determine if you are at risk for fracture. Give us a call to discuss if bone density testing is right for you, and schedule a consultation with one of our specialists.

What is Bone Density Testing?
Bone density testing is often referred to as bone densitometry or a bone mineral density scan (BMD), is a simple, noninvasive procedure and it takes just minutes. Unlike a bone scan, it does not utilize  the injection of radioactive contrast material into the bloodstream. Your bone density will be compared to the average bone density measurement of young female adults of the same race.

Do I need Bone Density Testing?
After the onset of menopause, bone loss increases each year and can result in a total loss of 25%-30% of bone density in the first five to ten years. While your doctor will help you decide if bone density testing is something you need, in general, this testing is recommended for women 65 and older, younger postmenopausal women who have further risk factors for osteoporosis, and women who have other risk factors for osteoporosis.
