About Us

Richard Frances MD, F.A.C.P., F.A.P.A.

Dr. Richard Frances, MD, F.A.C.P., F.A.P.A. is the current director of public and professional education at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut and has his own private practice in Manhattan. He was appointed as the Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in the Division of Substance Abuse of the Department of Psychiatry. His past credentials include being the president and medical director at the Silver Hill Hospital. He founded and chaired the Council of Addiction Psychiatry of the APA, and was founding President of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. He has written several hundred publications in addiction psychiatry and his Third Edition of his Clinical Textbook of Addiction Disorders, published by Guilford Press, came out in May 2005. He regularly guests on Court TV, and aside from being the clinical professor of psychiatry at N.Y.U. Medical School, he is an adjunct professor at UMDNJ in Newark, New Jersey.

He gained his undergraduate degree at Columbia College in New York in 1967, where his studies focused in Psychology, Art History and Oriental Studies. At the New York University Medical School, he received his Graduate and Professional degree. Postdoctoral training includes internships and residencies; a Psychiatric Residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Bronx Municipal Hospital where he was a Chief Resident. He underwent Psychoanalytic Training at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.

He has a history for working for the U.S. Navy Reserve as the Director of the Alcohol Treatment Program of Outpatient and Inpatient Treatment at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Bremerton, Washington. He has a license to practice in both the state of Connecticut and the state of New York. He was board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and recertified for his added Qualifications in Addiction Psychiatry. He is appointed at numerous prestigious hospitals (The New York Hospital at Cornell Medical Center, Westchester Division), as a visiting doctor and he received many awards and honors over the years.

He has served on many Boards of Directors, including the Will Rogers Foundation and the American Academy of Psychiatrists in Alcoholism and Addictions. He has lived through many roles: chairman of the Committee on Alcoholism, American Psychiatric Association, the founding member of the Council of Addiction Psychiatry of the American Psychiatric Association, and Founding President of the American Academy of Psychiatrists in Alcoholism and Addictions (AAPAA). He has held memberships, offices and committee assignments in a number of professional societies. For instance, he is the founder, first President, and Committee Chairman of the Public Policy Committee of the American Academy of Psychiatrists in Alcoholism and Addictions.

His major research interests include:

- Dual Diagnosis
- Drug Dependency
- Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
- AIDS

Dr. Frances has been the Vice Chairman and Director of Residency Training at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. He has served as the Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey for the past 20 years. He was also appointed as the Director of Residency Training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey from1986-1993. He also has the experience of Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey from July 1993-1997.

Dr. Frances has been the reviewer for publications and periodicals, a contributing editor to medical and psychiatric journals and he has a Controlled Substance Registration in Narcotics Certification.
