For three years Dr. Legato was a visiting fellow in cardiology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and continues there to this day as a professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. Since the 1960s, she been an attending physician at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and has also been an attending physician at Presbyterian Hospital for the past ten years. Dr. Legato is a world-renowned specialist in women's health and founded and directed the Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University. She is a devout researcher on the relationship between women and heart disease, winning the American Heart Association's Blakeslee Award for best book on cardiovascular disease. She is also the founder and editor of the Journal of Gender-Specific Medicine. She is a recipient of numerous awards and accolades for her work, including the Woman in Science Award from the American Medical Women's association.
