Lasik Helps U.S. Retain Pilots, Astronauts

The natural human aging process is in a constant war with the U.S. military and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Aging has always degraded the vision of Air Force pilots, Navy divers and NASA astronauts - and this has made it difficult for the respective services to retain them. The government has always feared that eyeglasses and contact lenses could be broken or dislodged in the course of the service members' often grueling work, threatening life, limb and government property in the process. Even with the advent of Lasik surgery, the fear didn't subside.

Choosing Between Traditional and Custom Lasik

Lasik eyesight-correction surgery, a phenomenal breakthrough when it was first approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration in 1995, has recently been trumped big-time by the innovation known as wavefront Lasik technology, which is some 25 times more precise than its older cousin. The consumer still has both choices available today - the traditional versus the new custom technique - but there is an enormous difference in technology.

Congenital Glaucoma

Congenital glaucoma is an eye disease where the normal eye pressure is affected by the buildup of fluid in the eye. You might say that 3 year old Juan Navarro is a little ham. Smiling and posing for the camera, he looks like your typical playful toddler. But when he was just an infant his mother Carmen noticed that his eyes did not look right. "There was a lot of white in his eyes." recalls Carmen. Doctors discovered that Juan was born with congenital glaucoma. It occurs in about 1 in every 10,000 births. The key to treating congenital glaucoma is early diagnosis.

What are the causes of Color Blindness and how does it present?

What is Color Blindness?

color.jpgThe first report on color blindness was written by the British chemist John Dalton who was himself afflicted with it. Your ability to see colors across the spectrum begins with your eyes ability to accurately distinguish the 3 primary colors; red, blue and green. Light enters the eye through the lens and passes through the transparent main body of the eye called the vitreous body. It then hits color sensitive cells called cones in the retina at the back of the eye. Chemicals in these cones distinguish among colors and send information through the optic nerve to the brain. If your cones lack one or more light sensitive chemicals you may see only two colors for example; either red and green or blue and yellow.

Lasik Study

If you're considering LASIK surgery to get rid of your glasses, you might want to ask your doctor about the risks of LASIK surgery. There are many factors that can play a role in the success of the procedure, even factors like the temperature and humidity. A new study just released shows that climate factors like temperature and humidity can affect LASIK surgery outcomes. Often, the patient has to come back in to get a touchup, to fine tune the vision correction.
