More Evidence That Fish Oil Aids Heart Health
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish or fish oil supplements not only help prevent cardiovascular diseases in healthy individuals, but also reduce the incidence of deadly cardiac events in patients with existing heart disease, according to new research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. ( Read more about More Evidence That Fish Oil Aids Heart Health)

More Cardiac Death in Women Using Antidepressants
Antidepressant use among women is associated with greater risk for sudden cardiac death, a recent study revealed. But the reason for the link is unclear, and the fact doesn’t suggest that antidepressants should be avoided, the scientists said. In fact, it may be that antidepressant use is just a sign of depression, and the real causal link is between depression and heart problems. The report said women with clinical depression had more than twice the risk of experiencing sudden cardiac death. ( Read more about More Cardiac Death in Women Using Antidepressants)

Caffeine During Pregnancy May Damage Fetus' Heart
In our highly caffeinated American society, one class of people may be particularly at risk: expectant mothers and the fetuses they bear.
Recent experimental evidence indicates that pregnant mice exposed to just a single dose of caffeine (the equivalent of two cups of coffee in humans) produce young that have flawed hearts, reduced cardiac function over their entire lifespan, and, among males, higher body fat. What is the Polypill?
Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the Polypill. The Polypill is being developed in response to an important reality surrounding cardiovascular disease. There are three important drugs that can help prevent heart disease (statins, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin). These drugs are not taken for two major reasons. First, the drugs are simply too expensive for much of the world, including countries as developed as Russia. And secondly, in developed nations where the drugs are affordable patients too often fail to comply - after three years 70% of patients do not take the medications as prescribed. Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the 6 causes or risk factors behind coronary artery disease. There are two physical risk factors: high blood pressure and size of the waist (or abdominal obesity). There are two chemical risk factors: cholesterol levels in the blood and blood glucose (diabetes). And finally, there are two lifestyle risk factors: smoking and exercise. What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?
Dr. Sattesh Babu of Vascular Associates of Westchester discusses Peripheral Arterial Disease, who is at risk, why it is important to be screened and current treatments. Pad is essentially a blockage of the arteries in the lower extremities. That is what we mean by peripheral arteries -- leg arteries blocked by hardening of the arteries, buildup of cholesterol, plaque and calcium. This in part is a process of aging, but certainly also brought on by smoking. Diabetes is another risk factor, as is hypertension. ( Read more about What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?)

Women, Obesity Rates, and the Fountain of Youth
The fattening of America is so out there, so obvious, the question has become how do we get the message that we need to reverse the trend? Perhaps, the message is sinking in, at least among women. New research released by the CDC shows, among women, no significant increase in obesity was observed between 1999 and 2004…roughly a third of females remain obese ( Read more about Women, Obesity Rates, and the Fountain of Youth)
