Caffeine During Pregnancy May Damage Fetus' Heart

In our highly caffeinated American society, one class of people may be particularly at risk: expectant mothers and the fetuses they bear.

Recent experimental evidence indicates that pregnant mice exposed to just a single dose of caffeine (the equivalent of two cups of coffee in humans) produce young that have flawed hearts, reduced cardiac function over their entire lifespan, and, among males, higher body fat. What is the Polypill?

Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the Polypill. The Polypill is being developed in response to an important reality surrounding cardiovascular disease. There are three important drugs that can help prevent heart disease (statins, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin). These drugs are not taken for two major reasons. First, the drugs are simply too expensive for much of the world, including countries as developed as Russia. And secondly, in developed nations where the drugs are affordable patients too often fail to comply - after three years 70% of patients do not take the medications as prescribed.

What is Coronary Artery Disease?

Dr. Valentin Fuster, one of the world's leading cardiologists, discusses the basics of coronary heart disease. Dr. Fuster than describes the symptoms of a heart attack and how to differentiate these symptoms from other conditions. Most importantly, he urges viewers to pay attention to these symptoms and the importance of getting medical treatment as soon as possible, even if one has the least suspicion of a coronary incident. Getting treatment in the first hour or two can minimize damage to heart muscle.

What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?

Dr. Sattesh Babu of Vascular Associates of Westchester discusses Peripheral Arterial Disease, who is at risk, why it is important to be screened and current treatments. Pad is essentially a blockage of the arteries in the lower extremities. That is what we mean by peripheral arteries -- leg arteries blocked by hardening of the arteries, buildup of cholesterol, plaque and calcium. This in part is a process of aging, but certainly also brought on by smoking. Diabetes is another risk factor, as is hypertension.

What is Carotid Stenosis?

Dr. Sateesh Babu of Vascular Associates of Westchester discusses "What is Carotid Stenosis?", the treatments, who should be screened and future developments, such as new stenting techniques.

Women, Obesity Rates, and the Fountain of Youth

The fattening of America is so out there, so obvious, the question has become how do we get the message that we need to reverse the trend? Perhaps, the message is sinking in, at least among women. New research released by the CDC shows, among women, no significant increase in obesity was observed between 1999 and 2004…roughly a third of females remain obese

Coffee and Heart Attack Risk

Could your morning cup of coffee be putting you at risk for a heart attack! According to new research, that's the case for some individuals who are genetically susceptible. First of all this doesn't mean that if you drink coffee you're going to suffer a heart attack, and it also doesn't mean that even if you are one of the ones who carry the genes that make you susceptible that one or two cups is going to cause you harm. But mix that gene with one too many cappuccinos, and it could be a set up for a problem.

Heart CAT Scans

Fast heart CAT scans have been a screening test in limbo. The exact role and place for this exam, which is becoming more widely available, hasn't been well defined, until now.

Sudden Death Predictor

Sudden cardiac death is one of the leading causes of mortality in America. Now, new research points to a way to identify those most at risk--and it involves a simple exercise test. The frustration lies in the name of the problem. Sudden cardiac death is sudden because it's typically the first sign or symptom that an individual has a heart problem. And, often, sadly, it's the last.

Why and How Does the Body Age?

How the Body Ages:

The nucleus of every cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes. And they contain DNA or the genetic material of the cell. A prime cause of ageing is every cell's chromosomes are capped with a protein button called a telomere. As individuals age, these telomeres wear out and fray, slowing and halting
