Caffeine Found to Reduce Pain of Exercise
A cup of coffee prior to intense exercise can make a workout more tolerable by modulating the way the nervous system processes pain, a recent study showed. The study, published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, was done by Robert Motl, professor of kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois. Green Tea Promotes Healthy Gums
Men who drink green tea appear to have greater periodontal health than those who don't, a recent study revealed. And it seems the more green tea they drink, the better their gum health is. Periodontal disease is a chronic condition in which the gums and bone supporting the teeth are inflamed. It's been associated with the advancement of other illnesses such as heart disease, hardening of the arteries and diabetes. ( Read more about Green Tea Promotes Healthy Gums)

Reducing Salt a Little Can Increase Health a Lot
If Americans cut their overly heavy salt consumption by as little as 1 gram (400 milligrams of sodium) a day, the result would be 200,000 lives saved from heart disease and stroke over the course of a decade, according to a recent study. And if Americans went so far as to cut their salt intake in half, the action would prevent up to 150,000 premature deaths a year, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Caffeine Found to Reverse Alzheimers' In Mice
Giving the caffeine equivalent of five cups of coffee a day to aged mice with symptoms of Alzheimer's reversed two signs of the disease: it reversed memory impairment and reduced the hallmark protein (beta-amyloid) in the animals' blood and brains, according to recent research. The research was the work of scientists from the Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) at the University of South Florida and colleagues from other research centers in the US. Expert Commentary: Dr. Micozzi, M.D. - May 26, 2009
We are all beginning to realize that too much salt may be bad for our health. Yet, our bodies need some sodium (better known as salt) to function properly.
The body uses sodium, to maintain the right balance of fluids in our bodies. We also need sodium to transmit nerve impulses. In addition, sodium influences the contraction and relaxation of muscles. ( Read more about Expert Commentary: Dr. Micozzi, M.D. - May 26, 2009)

Is Coffee Good or Bad?
So here is another story proclaiming the benefits of coffee. The International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism reports that a cup coffee before high intensity exercise reduces muscle pain thus helping the avid muscle grower work harder.
Well, when I look at my more modest physique in the mirror, I remember being told as a kid that drinking coffee would stunt your growth and should only be drunk as an adult. Only once you had reached full height could you sip this dangerous brew. ( Read more about Blog Post: Stuart Diamond, Editor-in-Chief - May 22, 2009)

Worried Sick? There Might Be Some Truth There
A recent report by health provider BUPA has found that people's worries are damaging their health by causing sleepless nights, loss of sex drive, and erratic eating habits. The 2007 Worry Report demonstrates that almost one in five people constantly worry about numerous things, and more than half feel they worry more now than five years ago. Half of the people surveyed this year, which is 6% more than in 2006, claimed they were more worried about their health and their family's health than about other concerning issues such as climate change or terrorist attacks. The survey finds that almost three quarters of people worry, but around 19% admit to worrying all the time or about a number of things. ( Read more about Worried Sick? Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems
A Review in The Lancet reveals the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to reduce stressors related to cardiovascular risk factors. Researchers from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore examined records between 1990 to 2006. They observed how stress affects the sympathetic nervous system, impacts physiology, and the effect it has on the cardiovascular system. Lead author, Daniel Brotman, claims "Acute physical stressors such as sugery, trauma, and intense physical exertion are well known triggers of cardiovascular events. Emotional stressors are increasingly recognized as precipitants of such events." ( Read more about Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems)

Rapid Rise in "Complementary" Medical Services

Have you been to a practitioner besides your family physician? Whether chiropractic care, acupuncture, yoga or homeopathy, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) has become increasingly common in the United States, and 72% of adults use some form of CAM therapies according to the US National Centers for Disease Control and US National Center for Health Statistics. A recent cover story in The New York Times Magazine highlighted how chronic pain tends to be under treated because doctors worry about over prescribing medications, and being liable for malpractice or even criminal penalties. Many doctors fear entering the field of pain management at all. Many patients are also concerned about becoming dependant on medication or about the invasiveness and dangers of surgery and anesthesia. CAM therapies, which are able to treat pain and help manage diseases without medication or surgery, are rapidly growing services as people search out better, safer approaches. So how effective are Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies? ( Read more about Rapid Rise in "Complementary" Medical Services)
