Breakfast Sandwich

It might surprise you that at this time when people are cutting back on portion size and are worried about carbs and calories and the problem of obesity in America, one fast food company is rolling out a supercharged high fat breakfast sandwich. Petite wouldn't be the word to describe it, nor would moderately sized, nor large, nor really big.

Burger King's enormous breakfast sandwich packs in more food that it should. It might seem strange at a time when people are cutting back on portion size and are worried about carbs and calories and the problem of obesity in America. Called the enormous omelet sandwich, it comes with two eggs, sausage, three strips of bacon, and two slices of melted American cheese on a bun.

The price--and we're not talking about dollar value--.is this: 730 calories and 47 grams of fat. Carla Wolper, a nutritionist at St. Luke's hospital in New York, says, "People have big eyes, they often sort of think they want more than they need. And given a little bit less, people would be just as happy with it." Denny Post, a Burger King spokesperson says surveys showed customers wanted bigger sandwiches.

"What has been happening is that they haven't been able to grab something like that on the go. So the enormous omelet sandwich was designed for someone who wanted to start their day with a big breakfast." "It's very inexpensive, 2.99, so for a certain segment of the population, it represents getting a lot of energy or calories at a very low price." says Wolper.

This is not the fattiest meal on the BK menu: the double whopper packs in 1060 calories and 69 grams of fat. But the enormous omelet sandwich tops the breakfast menu. Other fast food restaurants have similar fattening food options on their menus: at Mcdonald's, a sausage egg and cheese Mcgriddle has 560 calories and 32 fat grams,.comparable to the Big Mac, which also has 560 calories and 30 grams of fat.

A chocolate chip muffin at Dunkin' Donuts weighs in with 630 calories and 26 fat grams. So it comes close, .but doesn't beat the enormous omelet. Wolper states, "It's just too many calories in one meal." Burger King does offer a healthy menu, including four salads, that's if you avoid the fattening dressing, and they are the only chain to sell a vegetarian burger as well.

They point out you can choose things your way, so if you want to reduce the fat and calories in the enormous omelet sandwich, ask them to hold the sausage which is the most fattening part of the meal. The nutritional content is usually posted on the walls of the restaurant, or you can ask for it. Even better, you can go online and go to the company's website and you can see the nutritional content of each selection.

On the burger king site you can selectively remove certain items and alter the content, something you can do at the restaurant by ordering -your way- for a healthy breakfast sandwich.
