"Mind-Reading" MRI Lets Scientists Examine Spatial Memory

An MRI machine that measures blood flow in the brain shows how spatial memories are recorded in the hippocampus, allowing scientists to "read" a person's mind and find where he is by what part of that brain area is energized, a recent study showed. A Potential Cure for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Deep cerebral stimulation with microelectrodes in very tiny, specific target areas of the brain produce a dramatic improvement in many of those who suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), results of a recent clinical trial show. OCD can devastate people's lives by consuming them with an obsession for cleanliness, order and symmetry. OCD sufferers are also often paralyzed by doubts and irrational fears. To control their anxiety, they engage in rituals of tidying, washing or verification, sometimes for several hours a day. The problem can last for years. This behavior shouldn't be confused with obsessive, perfectionist and meticulous personality traits, which are entirely normal.

Women in Red Attract Men More

In a study that has powerful implications for dating, the fashion industry, product design and marketing, the color red was shown to distinctly boost men's attraction to the opposite sex. "It's fascinating to find that something as ubiquitous as color can be having an effect on our behavior without our awareness," said Andrew Elliot, a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester in upstate New York.

Virtual Reality Room to Treat Psychological Disorders

A $6 million virtual reality "immersive room" that's been constructed in a cyberpsychology lab in Canada will be used to treat patients with everything from air-travel phobias to gambling addictions to eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The innovative, high-tech psychotherapeutic tool is presided over by Stéphane Bouchard, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Clinical Cyberpsychology and is co-founder of the cyberpsychology lab at the Université du Québec en Outaouais in Gatineau, Quebec. Bouchard's virtual reality room is the only one of the 10 in the world devoted exclusively to clinical psychology.

Pine Bark for ADHD

In this week’s remedy or ripoff segment, we look at an over the counter supplement touted as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in kids. It’s an extract from pine bark; but is it everything it claims to do? It’s called pycnogenol, and the makers say it’s a powerful antioxidant; in fact, that it’s a super antioxidant. They claim published findings have demonstrated pycnogenol’s beneficial effects in diabetes, asthma, skin care, fertility, sports endurance, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The last claim is what we’re specifically investigating.

Adult ADHD

It’s most often thought of as a childhood disorder. But adult ADHD —attention deficit hyperactivity disorder—is very common, affecting around eight million U.S. adults. And now new research shows many of these individuals need help getting help. One of the ways that adult ADHD differs from childhood ADHD is that most of the adults are undiagnosed and untreated. But if they can get help, it can have a dramatically positive effect in their lives.

Autism and ADHD Diagnosis

Autism and ADHD are two very different childhood diagnoses, but some overall questions in common: are they over diagnosed, and are there truly epidemics of these two conditions? It’s instructive to first say that no one study, including these two new studies in the journal pediatrics will give the final answer to these questions. ADHD and Television

Can television actually cause your child to develop attention deficit disorder? There have been studies suggesting this is true, and now another new study weighs in. There are many reasons for experts to be concerned about the ill effects television can have on children. One concern is that too much watching can trigger attention problems. But a major study out of the American Academy of Pediatrics now says that’s probably not the case.

ADHD Report Card

Zach Neville was 4 years old when doctors diagnosed him with ADHD. “They were really the classic symptoms if you go on the internet and you look at what the diagnostic criteria are, the impulsivity, the hyperactive, the inattentiveness, they were social skills issues going on, there was a lot of acting out, not being about to sit still during circle time, very basic preschool activities,” says Zach’s mother, Jeanne Neville. Jeanne, Zach’s mom, says initially she felt overwhelmed and confused on how to best take care of her son. Their family first started with an intensive behavior management plan, but, as Zach entered school he needed medication and additional therapy.
