A Stressful Job Raises a Woman's Risk of Heart Disease

A recent study conducted at the Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts compared women in highly stressful occupations compared to women in less stressful occupations and found that stress had a significant impact on health.

Specifically, they found that woman in high stress jobs were 40% more likely to have heart attacks, ischemic stroke, suffer from cardiac disease, and need treatment for blocked arteries. These findings were presented at the America Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2010 in Chicago, Illinois today. The presenters also stated that job insecurity is associated with a higher risk of hypertension, high blood cholesterol levels, and weight issues.

The presenters referred not just to job stress but job strain, which they define as a job which is highly demanding, but does not endow an individual with much authority or ability to apply creativity or individual skills.

Senior study author, Michelle A. Albert, M.D., M.P.H., said:

"Our study indicates that there are both immediate and long-term clinically documented cardiovascular health effects of job strain in women. Your job can positively and negatively affect health, making it important to pay attention to the stresses of your job as part of your total health package."

The research team examined the job strain of 17,415 women who took part in the Women’s Health Study. All the women who participated in the study were healthy professionals; the majorities were Caucasian women with an average age of 57 years. Participants’ risk of heart disease was studied over a period of ten years. A questionnaire was used to determine the level of job insecurity and job strain. Prior studies into the effect of job strain had focused more on men and a narrower set of heart diseases.
