Brain Cancer Treatment

There is no one treatment for brain cancer and brain cancer treatment depends on various factors, including a patients general health, age, the type of tumor, stage and size. Treatment options are typically decided upon after on-going consultations between a team of specialists including oncologists, neurosurgeons and health care providers. Other members could include physical therapists, social workers and dietitians. The most commonly used treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. In many cases, these treatments are used in conjunction with one other.

Surgery

Surgery completely eliminates benign tumors and many malignant tumors in their earlier stages. It is the most common treatment for the removal of brain cancers. Possible side-effects of surgery include headaches and soreness in the head days after surgery, lethargy, a build-up of blood or cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and infection. Most of these side-effects are easily treatable.

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy (also called Radiation Therapy) is typically used on brain cancer patients who cannot undergo surgery (due to an underlying health condition). It is also used after surgery sometimes to kill all remaining cancerous cells. Radiotherapy is administered by exposing the cancerous tissue to radiation (external or internal).

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses single or multiple drugs to kill cancerous cells. These drugs are administered either orally or intravenously. As of 2010, the most effective chemotherapy drugs include temozolomide and bevacizumab. Chemotherapy has several side-effects, some of which are hard for some people to tolerate. Typical side-effects include vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, mouth sores and hair loss.
