Brain Cancer Symptoms
Brain cancer is the umbrella term given to more than 100 different types of tumors. Certain types of brain tumors are more common in children while others are prevalent in adults. A brain tumor can block the flow of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)--resulting in an over-accumulation of CSF, which increases pressure on the cranium. This leads to symptoms such as headaches, vomiting and nausea. Brain tumors are also liable to compress brain tissue and damage important neurological pathways.
Brain cancers are characterized with feelings of lethargy or fatigue. They also cause problems with talking, reading and memory. However, not all brain cancer victims develop the same symptoms. Some exhibit multiple symptoms simultaneously while approximately 33.3% have no apparent symptoms.
Some of the most common symptoms of brain cancer include problems with movement, paralysis, numbness, pain, bad vision, weakness, speech problems and seizures. However, symptoms depend on the location of the tumors—which part of the brain they are localized in.
Brain tumors in the frontal lobe of the brain may cause papilledema (inflammation of the optic nerve and vision loss), hemiplegia (condition in which one side of the body is paralysed), impaired smell, impaired sense of judgement, emotional and behavioral changes and reduced cognitive function.
Brain tumors located in the left and right hemispheres of the frontal lobe can cause an uncoordinated, clumsy gait and cognitive and behavioral changes.
A brain tumor located in the parietal lobe can cause impaired sense of recognition, seizures, impaired speech, inability to write coherently and spatial disorders.
A tumor in the occipital lobe of the brain can cause seizures and vision loss.
Tumors located in the temporal lobe are typically without symptoms (asymptomatic) but can cause seizures and speech problems.
Brain cancers in the brainstem can produce emotional and behavioral changes, difficulty swallowing and speaking, headaches, drowsiness, hearing loss, muscle weakness on one side of the face or body, crossed eyes or vision loss, uncoordinated gait and vomiting.
