Brain Cancer Staging

Brain cancer is one of the deadliest of all cancers. It is caused due to an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells within and around the brain. Statistics show that nearly 13,000 people die from brain cancer per year in the United States alone.

Brain cancers go through several developmental stages, with each stage increasing in intensity. Brain cancer grading is helpful in determining the treatment options available for each stage.

Brain cancers are graded by several diagnostic methods, including a biopsy, lumbar puncture, magnetic resonance imaging scans (MRI scans), x-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans.

Stage I brain cancer: This is the earliest stage of brain cancer. Cancerous cells at this stage are barely visible under a microscope and can be completely eliminated by surgery.

Stage II brain cancer: Stage II brain cancerous cells start to grow and spread into nearby cells. This stage is treatable but has the potential of developing into a higher-stage, aggressive cancer.

Stage III brain cancer: These cancers are marked by cells that show aggressive, speedy growth. They are likely to spread to other tissues. Treatment options at this stage are limited and

Stage IV brain cancer: Stage IV brain cancer is an aggressive tumor that is difficult, but not impossible to treat. It often spreads to other parts of the body and is likely to infect other organs.
