Brain Cancer Prognosis
Brain cancer prognosis (outcome or likely course of the disease) depends on various factors, including the stage of the brain cancer; size, location and type of brain cancer; and a patients age, response to treatment and general health. Prognosis helps doctors chart-out an appropriate course of treatment option based on information gathered from years of research. However, no two patients are alike and treatment options as well as responses vary greatly among individuals.
Brain cancer prognosis can be either favorable or unfavorable. Benign brain cancers are curable since the cancerous cells remain localized while malignant worsen with time, if left untreated. Malignant tumors are either primary or secondary brain tumors. Primary brain cancer starts in the brain while secondary brain tumors originate in another part of the body (like the breast or lung) and later spread to the brain.
Generally, patients with metastatic brain cancer (cancer which originates in another part of the body and invades the cells of the brain) have a poor prognosis. Treatment options are based on improving their quality of life and prolonging survival.
Research shows that patients who survive the first two years after they are diagnosed with brain cancer have a 70% chance of surviving for another 5 years at least.
Brain cancers that have at least 60% survival rates in adults include oligodendrogliomas, astrocytomas and medulloblastomas. Medulloblastomas in children have at least 60% survival rate as well. Unfortunately, most other primary brain tumors, including glioblastoma multiforme and anaplastic astrocytomas are rarely curable.
