Brain Cancer Genetics

Brain cancer, or brain tumor, is the abnormal growth of brain cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 22,000 new cases of brain cancer are diagnosed in the United States per year, causing more than 13,000 deaths.

Brain cancers are either malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). Glioma is a type of  malignant cancer that originates in a glial cell of the spine or brain. There are many types of gliomas, with astrocytoma being the most common. Genetics play a role in the development of glioma. Research indicates that gliomas result due to interactions between toxins and genes.

Some brain cancers are inherited. Very few types of brain tumors have a genetic link. The authors state that 5% of brain cancer patients have a family member with a brain tumor (similar or the same type as present in the primary patient) and 19% of patients have a close relative with some form of cancer. These findings suggest that some people are genetically predisposed to inheriting genes and anamolies in genetic structure that lead to the development of brain cancer.

Michael A. Weiner and Mitchell S. Cairo report similar findings in the book “Pediatric hematology/oncology secrets.” According to them, having a sibling or a parent with brain cancer increased a persons risk of developing brain cancer by three to ninefold.

Many types of brain cancers are also thought to arise due to interactions between genes and environmental factors. Mutagenic and toxic environmental substances increase the susceptibility of people with a genetic predisposition to developing brain cancer.
