Brain Cancer Demographics

Brain cancer is a high-risk cancer that is the third common cause of cancer related death in adults between the ages of 20 and 39 and the leading cause of cancer related death in children. Approximately 150,000 people are diagnosed with brain cancer annually, of which at least 40,000 diagnosis are made in the United States.

There are many types of brain cancers—certain are prevalent in children while others are more common in adults. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), primary brain cancers have 9 categories, including Pilocytic astrocytoma, Infiltrative astrocytoma, Oligodendroglioma, Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), Mixed oligoastrocytoma, Meningioma, Medulloblastoma and Ependymoma. These brain tumors are localized within the brain or its surrounding tissue. Secondary brain tumors (also called metastatic brain tumors) are those that originate elsewhere in the body but spread to the brain. They include colorectal cancer, breast cancer and melanoma.

Populations that are at considerably higher risk for brain cancer include men, Caucasians, African Americans, American Indians and the elderly. According to research, brain cancer affects 5.6 Caucasian men per 100,000 and 2.8 per 100,000 Caucasian women; 12.8 per 100,000 African American men and 6.3 per 100,000 African American women; 11.2 per 100,000 Asian/Pacific Islander men and 6.8 per 100,000 Asian/Pacific Islander women; 7.3 per 100,000 American Indian/Alaska Native men and 4.1 per 100,000 American Indian/Alaska Native women; and 9.5 per 100,000 Hispanic men and 5.3 per 100,000 Hispanic women.

According to Lynn C. Garfunkel et.al., in the book “Mosby's Pediatric Clinical Advisor,” brain cancer affects 34 children per 1 million children annually. 1,500 children below the age of 15 are diagnosed with brain cancer in the United States per year.

Major types of brain cancers that affect children include astrocytoma (50% of all cases), medulloblastoma (20%), ependymoma (10%) and other brain tumors (20%).
