Brain Cancer Tests
Brain cancer can be effectively detected with numerous diagnostic tests. These tests can allow physicians and oncologists to accurately determine the presence of a brain tumor, its type and grade to chart out the most liable treatment plan. Some of the most common tests include:
Physical Exam
A physical exam is used to analyze the possible symptoms of brain tumor. Physical tests typically include a doctor asking about a patient's family and personal medical history and performing a physical diagnosis of the patient. The doctor will gauge the general health of the patient, check for signs of brain tumor, analyze muscle strength, reflexes, coordination and response to pain. The doctor will recommend additional procedures and tests for a more accurate diagnosis.
CT Scan
A CT (Computed Tomography) scan involves taking a series of detailed x-ray photographs of the brain and skull. A special colored dye is injected in the body, which show tumors, if any, of the brain.
MRI Scan
An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is one of the most popularly used diagnostic tests used to detect brain tumors. The process uses electromagnetic radiation to take detailed pictures of the brain, which are then studied to detect brain cancers.
PET Scan
A PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan is a specialized brain cancer test that generates images of the multiple chemical and physical changes taking place within the brain. This allows physicians to detect whether the brain is functioning effectively or not.
Biopsy
A brain cancer biopsy involves surgically removing and studying a sample brain tissue under a microscope to detect the presence of a tumor. Biopsies are effective to detect brain tumors, their types, grades and staging. Biopsies, like all surgical procedures, are associated with a 3 percent degree of risk, including the development of blood clots, hemorrhages and infections.
