Brain Cancer Risk Factor
Brain cancer, despite its prevalence and the volumes of research conducted on it, is an elusive condition and its exact causes are not known. However, certain risk factors increase the chances of developing the condition. Risk factors are all those conditions or factors that increase the risk of developing a certain disease or condition.
Race
Certain races increase the chances of developing brain cancer. Brain cancer is more prevalent in whites than individuals of other races. The only exception is meningioma, which is a type of brain tumor that occurs more frequently in people of African-American origin.
Age
The risk of developing brain cancer increases with age. Brain cancer is more prevalent in individuals who are older. However, certain types of brain cancers, such as medulloblastomas, are more likely to occur in children.
Exposure to Radiation
Exposure to radiation increases the risk of developing brain cancer. Ionizing radiation is a particular type of radiation that significantly enhances the risk of developing brain tumors.
Chemical Exposure
Exposure to certain chemicals increases the risk of developing brain cancers. Individuals employed in certain occupations, including rubber manufacturing, oil refining and drug manufacturing. Embalmers and chemists, due to their constant exposure to harmful chemicals, are at increased risk of developing brain tumor.
Genetic Factors
A family history of brain tumors increases the risk of brain cancer. Individuals whose families have certain genetic conditions also increase the risk of developing a brain cancer.
Impaired Immune Systems
Individuals with impaired and weakened immune systems are at increased risk of developing brain cancer. Individuals who are HIV positive or have AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) are also at greater risk of developing brain cancer.
