Brain Cancer Rehabilitation
Brain cancer treatment brings on tremendous changes and can drastically effect how an individual will function. Brain cancer rehabilitation is that stage of treatment that follows typically after surgery and/or chemotherapy. Its primary purpose is to help restore daily functioning and allow an individual to effectively look after his or her primary needs.
There are many types of brain cancer rehabilitation, each one focused on a specific area. They include:
Physical Rehabilitation or Physical Therapy
Physical rehabilitation or physical therapy aims to improve an individuals motor functions and regain mobility. Physical therapists focus on gait training, balance training, improving strength and range of motion and postural retraining through exercises and physical therapy.
Language and Speech Therapy
Language and speech therapy focuses on improving the ability to communicate coherently and clearly. Therapists improve articulation by strengthening the muscles of the throat and mouth that are associated with the production of sound. Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive therapy focuses on restoring facial paralysis, balance, vision and other cognitive problems. It also helps patients deal with the limitations of memory loss.
Vocational Therapy
The vocational rehabilitation process helps individuals re-enter the workforce productively. Vocational therapists, after conducting a thorough vocational analysis, identify an individuals physical capabilities, cognitive ability and personal skills, and train and assist them to effectively identify potential work areas where the individual can apply him or herself productively.
Recreational Therapy
Recreational rehabilitation therapy focuses on rehabilitating, remediating or restoring an individuals recreational independence. It engages them to develop a new-founded interest in sports, group activities and individual activities. Recreational therapists help improve socialization and build confidence through community, group and individual sessions.
