Brain Cancer Prevention

The numbers are staggering. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 17,000 people are diagnosed with brain cancer each year in the United States, and 13,000 die from it. Research points out that a mere 5 individuals in a 1000 diagnosed cases successfully beat the disease. Despite these numbers, the exact causes of brain cancer remain elusive and since scientists do not know what exactly causes brain cancer, they cannot accurately predict how to prevent it.

The risk of developing brain cancer can be reduced if its primary causative factors, also called risk factors, are controlled. However, prevention does not necessarily guarantee that an individual will not develop the cancer. Uncontrollable factors such as genetics and gene mutation can cause brain cancer, the prevention of which becomes difficult.

The risk of developing brain cancer can be effectively reduced if its risk factors are curtailed or avoided all together. The risk factors of brain cancer include: race, gender, family history, age and exposure to certain chemicals and radiation. While risk factors such as race, gender, family history and age cannot be controlled, exposure to radiation and chemicals can to certain degree. However, managing these factors becomes difficult when working in environments profuse with them, such as workers constantly exposed to environments rich with acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride or formaldehyde.

Controlling other risk factors, including avoiding foods rich in nitrates (like cured meat and hotdogs), pesticides and beauty products containing large amounts of chemicals (like hair dyes and hairsprays) can lower the risk of developing brain cancer.
