Brain Cancer Causes
Brain cancer is the umbrella term that encompasses more than 100 different types of brain tumors. These cancers rank among the most common, and affect thousands of individuals annually. Despite their wide-spread prevalence, however, the exact cause(s) of brain cancer remain unknown. Research in this area has substantiated that certain risk factors increase the chances of contracting brain cancer. Various environmental factors (exposure to toxins), cigarette smoke and radiation can increase the chances of contracting brain cancer.
Brain cancer is a cancerous growth (malignant) in the brain due to genetic mutations or alterations in its cellular structure. There are two types of brain cancers: primary and secondary. Primary brain cancer originates in the brain and secondary (metastatic) brain cancer originates elsewhere in the body and travels to the brain.
Risk factors that contribute to brain cancer include race, family history, gender, exposure to chemicals and/or radiation and age. Brain cancers are typically more common in males. However, meningiomas are a type of brain cancer that are prevalent in females. Research shows that brain cancers are more likely to occur in Caucasian whites than other races. Most brain cancers are diagnosed in people 70 years old or older. However, certain types of brain cancers are common in children below the age of 8. Individuals with relatives who are prey to gliomas are more likely to develop brain cancers.
People who are exposed to certain chemicals (formaldehyde, acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride) and harmful radiation are at greater risk of developing brain cancer.
