Breast Cancer Survival

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, causing an upward of 40,000 casualties annually in the United States alone. Breast cancer follows various stages, each stage differing in intensity and survival rates. Health care professionals can typically accurately determine breast cancer survival rates based on the stage of the cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, Stage 0 and Stage I breast cancers have a 100% survival rate. Stage II breast cancer has a survival rate between 81% and 92% (Stage IIA survival rate is 92% and Stage IIB survival rate is 81%). Stage IIIA breast cancer has a survival rate of 67% and Stage IIIB has a survival rate of 54%. Stage IV breast cancer has the lowest rate of survival. It is 20%.

Other factors that determine survival rates include genetics, lifestyle and treatments. Survival rates also differ among different types of cancers. Localized breast cancer (that is restricted to breast tissue) have greater survival rates than those cancers that spread beyond the breast tissue and infect the lymph nodes and/or other organs. Localized breast cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 98%. Regional breast cancer (cancer that spreads to nearby lymph nodes) has a 5-year survival rate of 83.6%. Distant cancer (metastasized cancer), that affects other organs, has a 5-year survival rate of 23.4 percent.

Breast cancer survival rates differ among different races and ethnicities. While the condition is prevalent in white women, their survival rates are higher than the survival rates of African-American women. This can be attributed to racial differences in treatment or prognosis.
