Breast Cancer Rehabilitation

Breast cancer rehabilitation is viable and beneficial for patients across various stages of the disease, including those who are cured, those undergoing treatment and those at the end of their lives.

Breast cancer patients undergo two types of rehabilitation: those with local disease and those with systemic disease. Rehabilitation takes place on an outpatient basis in patients with localized types of breast cancer. Patients with systemic and metastatic breast cancer, rehabilitation is accomplished in an inpatient setting.

Inpatient breast cancer rehabilitation is a coordinated, multidisciplinary effort that combines therapeutic and medical treatments. Members of an inpatient breast cancer rehabilitation team typically include rehabilitation physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers, language and speech pathologists, dietitians, case managers and rehabilitation nurses.

Outpatient breast cancer rehabilitation occurs in various settings: at home with professionals, in specialized outpatient clinics, hospices, palliative care units, nursing homes and nursing facilities.

Breast cancer rehabilitation follows different stages, including preventative, supportive, restorative and palliative. Preventive rehabilitation therapy begins immediately after or before treatment to prevent disability and/or loss of function. Supportive rehabilitation aims to increase mobility and self-care. Restorative rehabilitation includes restoring function in a controlled or cured patient. Palliative rehabilitation efforts help terminally ill patients to maintain function and comfort.

The primary goals of breast cancer rehabilitation include: to achieve maximum comfort and pain relief; to enable a patient to resume optimal mobility; to increase strength and endurance; to educate patients and  their families on how to continue providing care at home; and to provide continual support and realistic expectations.
